Quick answer
Yes, Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete is a solid choice for highly active and working dogs, thanks to its high protein from chicken and eggs, plus joint support. But it's not for every dog—see the rules below.
Why high protein matters for active dogs
Working and athletic dogs burn more calories and need more protein to repair muscle tissue. Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete delivers 91% of its protein from chicken and egg ingredients, which are highly digestible and support lean muscle maintenance.
Joint support is a bonus, not a given
Glucosamine and chondroitin are added to support joint health in dogs that run, jump, or work hard. If your dog is already on a joint supplement, this food may let you reduce or stop that extra product. But if your dog has severe joint issues, consult your vet before relying solely on diet.
The 40 lb bag is economical but requires storage
At $35.74 (compared to $54.99), the 40 lb bag offers significant savings per pound. However, you need a cool, dry place to store it. If you have a small dog or limited space, a smaller bag might be more practical.
Decision rules for Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete
- Activity level: Choose this food if your dog works, hunts, competes, or exercises vigorously for more than an hour daily. For moderate or low activity, a lower-protein food is better to avoid excess weight gain.
- Protein source preference: If you want a chicken-based formula with minimal plant protein, this is a strong pick. If your dog needs a novel protein (e.g., fish, venison) due to allergies, look elsewhere.
- Budget and storage: The 40 lb bag is cost-effective if you have space and a large dog. If you have a small dog or limited storage, the savings may not justify the bulk. Consider splitting the bag with a friend if storage is tight.
